Spiritual and Physical Blessing of Qur’an Recitation

A Sermon by Dr. Allama Muhammad Jalal Raza Al Azhari

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. Allah’s Blessing and Salutation be upon our Master Muhammad, the Master of all Messengers, the Seal of the prophets and Allah’s Mercy to the Worlds. Peace and blessings be upon him and his family and his all companions.

Allah (Glory be to Him) says:

) ورتل القرآن ترتيلا ) (المزمل:4)

“And recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style.” (Al-Muzzammil73:4)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه (رواه البخاري)

“The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”(Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Respected brothers and sisters! I would like to talk to you in this meeting about the importance of recitation of Qur’an.

An expert of Tajweed composed poems about the obligation of the proper pronunciation of the words the Glorious Qur’an.

والأخذ بالتجويد حتم لازم *** من لم يجود القرآن آثم

لأنــه بــه الإلـــــه أنـــــزلا *** و هكذا منه إلينا وصــلا

(It is must to follow the rules of tajweed. Who did not recite the Glorious Qur’an with tajweed is a sinner,  because, Allah sent down the Glorious Qur’an with tajweed.  And it was transmitted to us with these rules.)

Definition of Tajweecd

Tajweed in Arabic means making something better, as well as tajweed, refers to the rules governing pronunciation during recitation of the Glorious Qur’an. The term is derived from the literal root-word j-w-d meaning “to make well, make better, or improve”.

Proper pronunciation of the word in any language has its importance and value, sometimes mistake in it leads to distort the meaning.

For example, if you pronounce,

كُلْ  it will mean “eat” but if you pronounce it as قُلْ it will denote “say” the word قُلْ is a frequent word in the Qur’an.

Virtues of reciting the Glorious Qur’an

Dear Brothers, nowadays people have deserted the Glorious Qur’an, Face-book, twitter and other modern devices have snatched the interests of the people. We waste a lot of time in backbiting and gossip and other insignificant things, but many of us do not know how to read the Glorious Qur’an in a proper way.

Depression, failure, sorrow are the phenomenon of this era in every home, why do we not try to bring tranquility in our homes by reciting the Glorious Qur’an?

We find many persons, who posses everything in this world, assets in the bank, luxurious car, palace, children, however they complain of their sorrows and depression and stressful circumstances, they spend sleepless nights. Do you know what is the cure and treatment? The treatment is in the recitation of the Glorious Qur’an. There are many Verses in the Glorious Qur’an and many Hadiths that verify our opinion.

Allah the Almighty says:

 )وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ القُرْآَنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ.)(الإسراء:82)

“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.” (Al-Isra’:82)

Physical and Spiritual Fruits of Recitation

The Glorious Qur’an is a real treatment that heals the hearts and minds and frees them from ignorance, evil and temptations. The verses of the Glorious Qur’an remove all kinds of doubts and hesitation and purify the hearts and minds of the people from all kinds of spiritual, intellectual and physical diseases enabling a person to understand the true meaning of the miracles in the Glorious Qur’an and the creations of Allah.

Additionally, the Glorious Qur’an is a mercy for the believers that relieves stress and grief and cleanse them of defects, flaws and sins; also a person deserves countless rewards on reciting it by the grace of Allah the Almighty. Thus, the heart of a person becomes full of peace and tranquility when he recites the verses of the Glorious Qur’an.

Some Hadiths on the Virtues of Reciting the Qur’an

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) says:

‏ “‏ لاَ تَجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ مَقَابِرَ وَإِنَّ الْبَيْتَ الَّذِي تُقْرَأُ فِيهِ الْبَقَرَةُ لاَ يَدْخُلُهُ الشَّيْطَانُ ‏”‏ (رواه الترمذي)

“Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed Satan does not enter the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi)

Moreover, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ كِتَابًا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْلُقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ بِأَلْفَىْ عَامٍ أَنْزَلَ مِنْهُ آيَتَيْنِ خَتَمَ بِهِمَا سُورَةَ الْبَقَرَةِ وَلاَ يُقْرَآنِ فِي دَارٍ ثَلاَثَ لَيَالٍ فَيَقْرَبُهَا شَيْطَانٌ ‏“

“Indeed Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He sent down two Ayat (verses) from it to end Surah Al-Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a home, no Satan shall come near it.”

“بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ إِذْ رَأَى دَابَّتَهُ تَرْكُضُ فَنَظَرَ فَإِذَا مِثْلُ الْغَمَامَةِ أَوِ السَّحَابَةِ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ تِلْكَ السَّكِينَةُ نَزَلَتْ مَعَ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ نَزَلَتْ عَلَى الْقُرْآنِ ‏”‏ (رواه الترمذي)

“There was a man reciting [Surah] Al-Kahf when he saw his riding animal stamping its feet, so he looked here and there and there was something like a shadow or cloud, so he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and mentioned that to him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “That was the tranquility which descends with the Qur’an, or descends because of the Qur’an.”

We pray to Allah to help us to recite the Glorious Qur’an and heal our spiritual and physical diseases by the sacred verses of Qur’an and save us from the worries and stress in this world and the hereafter.
